We took advantage of the jet lag & woke up at 4:00 am to drive up to the top of Haleakala (the volcano on Maui) for the sunrise. The summit is at 10,000 feet, so you're (almost) guaranteed a great view above the clouds. We were surprised when the sun rose above the clouds & a guide began singing. She explained some of the important rules & facts about the park & then we were free to walk around & explore.
The view of the lava flow.
A parking lot above the clouds!
You can see the shore below.
We asked someone to take a photo for us. It's so hard to get a good shot from a random person, but it's not too bad. I'm a little washed out, but beggars can't be choosers, right? :P
The endangered sword flower that only grows on Haleakala.
Another sword flower after it's bloomed.
Not too bad for a self-timed photo. ;)
Cool air force buildings.
Cedar at the top.
Finley at the top.
Finn had a hard time coming down the volcano. His ears couldn't pop fully & he was in a lot of pain & experiencing nausea. We managed to get ourselves to another beach & he was able to get some relief from swimming in the salt water, but didn't get complete relief until we gave him some decongestant. Poor guy. :(
Most days we spent some time at our condo's pool during Elsa's nap time. Kenton & I would switch off & the boys would happily swim for hours.
We ventured into Lahaina to see the sunset.
So lovely, warm, tropical...truly paradise!
